First : We want our parents to be aware that , the 22nd, we will be showing a 20 minute DVD put out by Shared Hope International entitled: Chosen. This excellent, age appropriate documentary was created for high school students in order to raise their awareness of the serious and frightening social issue of human trafficking. Several parents watched Chosen during parent teacher conferences and were very pleased that our students would receive this information. If you have any questions re: this documentary or wish to view it, please contact me. Be sure to ask your child about what he or she learned! We are hoping to offer a community viewing in the near future….
Secondly: Western High has a terrific staff of dedicated teachers. Has one of those creative, excellent teachers had an effect on your child? I would encourage you to take a moment and recognize a WHS teacher by nominating her or him for Jackson County Teacher of the Year. Nominations forms are available at Jackson Magazine.com or in the high school office. It is a simple process and will only take a few moments of your time. Please check our website above!
Next: We MUST have accurate contact information for every student and his or her parents. Having accurate, up to date phone numbers and email addresses is particulary important for use during emergencies , notification of school closings and these global connect calls. PLEASE go in to Power School, click on “update information” and be sure all of your contact information is correct. There is also a direct link on the HIGH SCHOOL main web page and a reminder on our Facebook page.
FINALLY. So that you have accurate information, I want you to know that we have been told that we have a student who is being treated for an upper respiratory illness caused by the Entero virus. This student has been out of school for several days, is being treated and is improving! We have had no other students affected. Please use the links on the WHS web page to explore what the facts are re: the Entero virus. This virus, like pneumonia or some flu viruses may be serious for the young, the old or those with pre-existing respiratory issues.
I have spoken with the infectious disease rep at the Jackson County Health Dept and have been informed that the entero virus is not a reportable disease and that there are no specialized cleaning routines we should follow. As is their usual weekly routine, our custodial team will wipe down desks and door handles tonight. We have been advised to encourage students to wash their hands often as we are entering cold and flu season.
If you have any questions or concerns on any of these issues….please contact me!
